NIETES TO FIGHT FOR WORLD CROWN SEP. 30

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY -- ALA Boy Donnie Nietes will fight for the vacant WBO Minimumweight Title against Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym of Thailand on September 30 at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City, Sammy Gello-ani of SGG Promotions has announced last night.

The WBO Minimumweight Title was up for grabs after Ivan Calderon of Puerto Rico vacated it when he won the light flyweight crown against Hugo Cazares of Mexico last week.

Gello-ani, speaking to the media at the Thanksgiving Party for the World Cup victors at the posh residence of ALA bossman Antonio L. Aldeguer at the Maria Luisa Subdivision in Banilad with celebrated trainer Freddie Roach and WBO bantamweight champ Gerry Pe?alosa in attendance, also bared that five other championship bouts will go with the card for a solid night of championship boxing.

SGG Promotions' Sammy Gello-ani (2nd from left) gestures as he announces the big card on Sep. 30 during last night's World Cup Thanksgiving Party at the posh residence of ALA's Antonio L. Aldeguer. To his left are Boxing Plaza's Mr. Park and ALA Manager Michael Aldeguer. At background are Donnie Nietes (L) and AJ Banal.

- Fast-rising super flyweight prospect AJ "Bazooka" Banal (14-0-1 11KOs), who made a great impression at the recent World Cup in Sacramento, will vie for the WBO Youth Superfly Crown against Mexico's Jovanny "Bambino" Soto (25-7-1 20KOs).

- Yong Seung Kim of Korea will battle Darsim Nangala of Indonesia for the WBO Interim Intercontinental Junior Welterweight Crown.

- Do Seuk Ooh of Korea goes up against Joey Ricardo of Indonesia for the WBF Asia-Pacific Junior Welterweight Title.

- ALA Boy Robert Allanic (17-3-0 8KOs) dukes it out with In Suk Sung (8-2-0 3KOs) of Korea for the WBO Asia-Pacific Bantamweight Crown.

- ALA Boy Rocky Fuentes (26-5-2 12KOs) will defend his Philippine Flyweight Crown against Danilo Lerio (13-1-1 2KOs) of Aljoe Jaro Stable.

The 25-year-old Nieties (19-1-3 11KOs), who hails from Bacolod City, is the No. 1 WBO minimumweight contender and will have his first shot for a world title. Nietes last fought on July 7 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu where he knocked out Thailand's Saengpetch Sor Sakulphan with a single shot in the seventh round. Nietes' two previous fights also ended via short knockout victories and he had racked up 10 victories since losing by split decision to Angky Angkota of Indonesia on September 28, 2004 in Jakarta.

Kratingdaenggym is the WBO No. 3 contender and has a fearsome record of 20 wins, no defeat with 15 knockouts and had victimized 9 Filipinos along the way including Sonny Boy Jaro, Jun Arlos and Benjie Sorolla whom he beat last August 1 via unanimous decision in Bangkok.

Nietes and Kratingdaenggym had a common opponent in Heri Amol of Indonesia. Nietes dispatched Amol in two rounds last year in Mandaue City while Kratingdaenggym knocked out Amol in the 8th round in April this year in Bangkok.

The WBO No. 2 contender Oleydong Sithsamerchai of Thailand had reportedly passed up the opportunity to fight Nietes for the title because he was leaning to instead challenge WBC champion Japan-based Thai Eagle Kyowa.

The WBO Championship Event on September 30 is being promoted by SGG Promotions in partnertship with Boxing Plaza Promotions of Korea and will be covered by local television giant ABS-CBN. The event will be beamed live in Korea while ABS-CBN will still finalize its scheduling for the show which will happen on a primetime Sunday, Philippine time.
