Pacquiao delivers a one-punch KO in the Senate
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Sep 2016
Manny Pacquiao's next fight would not be in six week's time, but the Fighting Senator from the Philippines is already in full fighting form as he delivered a one-punch political KO in the Philippine Senate.
The Philippine Senate today acted decisively on Pacquiao's motion to declare the chairmanship and membership of the Senate Committee on Justice vacant which paved the way for the ouster of its controversial current chairperson- Senator Leila De Lima.
De Lima, a strong critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, is investigating the series of "Extra Judicial Killings" that are attributed to the current administration. The former Justice Secretary is under public scrutiny in her manner of conducting the said hearings and is accused of partiality by many.
In her committee hearing last week, De Lima presented a surprise witness, Edgar Motobato, who confessed that he was a former assassin of then Davao Mayor Duterte and accused the president of masterminding a series of killings in the city.
Motobato, during the said hearings, had conflicting statements in the witness stand when questioned by other members of the Senate, which produced doubts of his integrity.
Sixteen senators voted yes to Pacquiao's motion, four voted against, and two abstained.
The next Senate Committee on Justice hearing is scheduled Thursday but it will now have a new chairperson and new members.
Senator Richard Gordon replaced De Lima as chairman of the committee.
Pacquiao along with Senators Francis Pangilinan, de Lima, Juan Miguel Zubiri, Grace Poe and Alan Cayetano were also elected as members of the committee during a senate vote held today.
