RENE DACQUEL RETAINS OPBF SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

The Philippines Rene Dacquel has retained his Orient Pacific Boxing Federation title with a tough win over Japan?s Go Onaga who was ranked No.3 contender in a fight card in Okinawa.

All three judges scored the fight for the 25 year old Filipino who is trained by Dino Olivetti and fights for the stable of Ryuta Kato of United International Promotions with its headquarters in Tokyo.

All three judges scored the fight for Dacquel with veteran Silvestre Abainza turning in a lopsided 117-110 scorecard while Biney Martin had Dacquel the winner 115-112 and Yoshikazu Furuta 114-113.

Dacquel had won the Interim title with a 9th round TKO over Thailand?s Rathaphol Suwaonsoda alias Lucky Tor Buamas in Bacolod City last April 1.

With the win Dacquel improved his record to 18?6-1 with 6 knockouts while the 36 year old veteran Onaga dropped to 27-3-2 with 18 knockouts.

Asian Boxing reported that Dacquel beat local favorite Onaga with the result likely to end Onaga?s dream of going after a world title. It was Onaga?s third pro title bout although he had won ten in a row over the last four years.

Dacquel reportedly knew what the bout meant to the challenger and the Okinawa crowd and ?dulled the emotion quickly using movement to zap the energy from the arena. It wasn?t a popular move but it was a smarter one than entering a firefight with Onaga.

The tactics had mixed success with the judges who after four rounds as is required by the Wold Boxing Council had the bout 39-37, 38-38 and 37-38 after four rounds.

Asian Boxing said that as the bout progressed the movement of Dacquel slowed and he was drawn into more and more of a fight which didn?t seem to bother the Filipino who ?found a home for his left hook downstairs and did damage with it in round eight, dropping Onaga which helped Dacquel earn a lead after eight rounds with the scorecards reading 77-74, 76-75 both in favor of Dacquel while the Japanese judge had it 76-75 in favor of Onaga.

In the end there was very little argument about the winner who was Dacquel who notched his first defense of his OPBF crown.
