DARCHINYAN KO'D BY FRIAS "KILLER PUNCH" By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Jul 2016 ![]() Veteran 40 year old former three-time world champion Vic Darchinyan get nailed by "killer punch" from junior featherweight Sergio Frias and suffered a stunning 2nd round TKO in Birmingham, Alabama. Tracy Morin at ringside reported that "As usual Darchinyan looked to pressure Frias who has fought mostly in Mexico and after a feeling out round "Finito" Frias circled the southpaw known for his devastating punching power before Frias unleashed a devastating right hand that dropped Darchiyan with the fight being immediately waved off at 2:14 of the 2nd round. In a post fight interview Darchinyan said "It was the first time that I've been knocked out in my 25 years of boxing. He just caught me. I think it was a counter right hand. I know I threw a punch and he just caught me. I can't believe that happened." Darchinyan obviously forgot that current five division world champion Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire scored a 5th round stoppage on July 7, 2012 in a IBO flyweight title fight when Darchinyan leaned forward with a left hand and was ripped with a smashing counter-left hook that sent him sprawling across the ring and out for the count. Sergio Frias said Drachinyan was "not a technically sound boxer, so I knew if I just stuck with technique and boxed him that I would catch him. I wanted to land the right hand, but I wanted to be careful because he has a lot of power. I wasn't really looking to land that particular punch, but I did, and I ended it. Frias improved to 18-6-2 while Darchinyan fell to 42-9-1 with 31 knockouts. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
