RP TEAM REPEATS OVER CHINA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Aug 2007 The San Miguel Corporation sponsored Philippine National Team repeated its Group A victory over China last Sunday with a close come-from-behind victory that kept faith with coach Chot Reyes’ pre-game prediction that the nationals “will keep the best for last.” In fact that’s exactly what they did, after trailing China at the end of the first quarter 19-22 and at the end of the half 36-38. The Chinese which sent its so-called “B” team to Tokushima hung on to a two point lead at the end of the third quarter but the Filipinos were not to be denied as they played their best in the final quarter which they won 19-15 to erase the two-point deficit and prevail by two. Seigle had his best game of the tournament finishing with 20 points and 6 rebounds even as he got great support from PBA “Rookie of the Year” Kelly Williams who had 8 big rebounds to go with his 14 points and Asi Taulava who once again played his heart out to finish with 13 points and six rebounds. Shooting star Dondon Hontiveros despite fouling out added 13 crucial points to seal the victory for the Philippines which may have lost its quest for a coveted berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics but won the respect of the Asian basketball powers with their gallant stand. The only disappointing note was that the nationals had only four assists while the Chinese had six which is a clear indication that it was more of a game that depended on individual performances rather than teamwork.
