WORLD CUP SPECIAL BY VIVA SPORTS ON RPN 9 By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 Aug 2007  The top rated weekly boxing show, “The Main Event” will present a special on the much-awaited World Cup of boxing on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. over RPN 9 with a replay on the popular sports and entertainment channel Viva Prime. The show is sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation and the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office. Fight fans will see the match-up between emerging ring sensation Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and have a chance to assess the undefeated Filipino's style against that of reigning WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon. They can also listen to former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa talk about the Bautista-Ponce De Leon clash as well as his own chances against WBO bantamweight champion Jhonny Gonzales. Penalosa dropped a twelve round decision to Ponce De Leon in a fight that some boxing writers felt he should have won. The action-packed special sets the stage for the World Cup coverage over the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN “live” from the Arco Arena in Sacramento, California, where newly crowned IBF/IBO flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will be special guest panelist on the “live” telecast of four of the seven fights. ABS-CBN vice president for sports Peter Musgni told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that veteran anchorman of the popular weekly boxing show “In This Corner” will be joined by Donaire and Dyan Castillejo who has immersed herself in the sport in recent years and traveled far and wide covering fights and fighters in training from Mexico to Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York and Tokyo. Musgni said the country’s No. 1 network across the nation will carry the fights of Bautista, Penalosa, Z “The Dream” Gorres and Bert Batawang “live” while the fights of AJ “Bazooka” Banal, Diosdado Gabi and Michael Domingo will be telecast on a delayed basis with the schedule being firmed up at the moment.
