NEBRAN FIGHTS GAMELY BUT LOSES LOPSIDED DECISION TO EX-WORLD CHAMPION MIJARES By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 20 Jun 2015  Mijares. Unranked Filipino featherweight Vergel Nebran battled gamely but lost a lopsided decision to former world super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares in Campeche, Mexico today. Nebran, the slugger from the Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde stable floored Mijares with a solid right hand flush on the jaw nut Mijares quickly got back and controlled the rest of the ten round bout and even dropped Nebran in the 9th round. Mijares launched what was reported as ?a brutal follow-up assault but Nebran did well to survive.? Two of the three judges had Mijares comfortably ahead 98-90 while the third judge also scored the fight for Mijares 87-91 The 25 year old Nebran stepped into the ring against the classy Mijares with a record of 13-8-1 with 8 knockouts while Mijares who was coming off four straight victories after losing to super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz last March 14 had a record of 51-8-2 with 25 knockouts. Mijares won the vacant WBC featherweight Silver title with a unanimous ten round decision over Nicaragua?s Lester Medrano on November 15, 2014 after earlier scoring a 7th round TKO over Sebastian David Rodriguez. Nebran was coming off a sixth round unanimous decision over journeyman Prell Tupaz whose record was a miserable 8 wins against 26 losses and 4 draws with only one knockout last February 28. He had earlier lost by a 6th round TKO to undefeated Rey Vargas (19-0,16 KO?s) on June 14, 2014. The effort to build up Nebran as a viable challenger to Mijares and a solid puncher who would provide a tough test for Mijares who was willing to scarp with anyone was proven to be all; hype although Nebran did show his punching power with the early knockdown but after that it was Mijares who dominated the fight.
