NBA -- Warriors romp over Cavs was most-watched Finals since '98 By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Jun 2015 ![]() CLEVELAND -- It wasn't quite Jordan-esque. But the just concluded 2015 NBA Finals proved to be a ratings bonanza for ABC-TV, which owned the broadcast rights for the world's premier pro basketball event. According to a report by ESPN, which is ABS' sister company, the Finals averaged 19.9 million viewers in the U.S. households. Viewership peaked in Game 6 as 23,254,000 viewers watched the Golden State Warriors finish off the Cleveland Cavaliers, 105-97, at the Quicken Loans Arena. The 1998 NBA Finals between the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz remained the highest rated Finals, pulling in over 20 million viewers per game. The Bulls won that series in six games, capping the franchise's second 3-peat. This year's Finals was super fan friendly, featuring LeBron James, the self-proclaimed best player and four-time MVP, against reigning MVP Steph Curry. All six games were close, two going to into overtime. But after trailing 2-1 following a close Game 3 loss, the Warriors strung together three straight wins to end a 40-year drought while Cleveland's 51-year search for a major league sports title continues. Curry led the Warriors with 26 points per game while LeBron led the Cavs with a near triple-double of 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists. But it was Andre Iguodala who was named Finals MVP. Although Iggy averaged only 16.3 points in six Finals games, he made a huge impact on both ends of the floor and was instrumental in containing James. Iguodala also normed 5.8 rebounds and four assists. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Adeline Deladisma. |
