2015 NBA Finals -- Warriors move 1 win away from championship

PhilBoxing.com

OAKLAND -- "My goal is to see confetti at the end of the game!" a proud (and loud) Pinoy member of the Warrior faithful shouted in the middle of the third quarter.

The atmosphere inside the Oracle Arena on Sunday night (Monday morning Manila time) was still boisterous but perhaps a little more tense as the Golden State Warriors faced off against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

The home team pulled through after another clutch fourth quarter performance by Steph Curry, who had 17 points (including 3 of 5 three pointers) in the final stanza to bring down the Cavaliers 104-91.

Much to the dismay of the Dub Nation, the Cavaliers have put up a fight after losing two of their starters (guard Kyrie Irving and forward Kevin Love) during their playoff run. The Finals has been reduced into a best of three series after both teams won and lost on their respective home courts.

How would each team come out of the gates?

There was little doubt that Cleveland would turn to LeBron James to carry his team. The Warriors finally found success against the Cavaliers in the last game, holding James to his lowest point total of the series. They continued their small ball assault and kept their Game 4 starting lineup that included Andre Iguodala at small forward and Draymond Green at center.

The game was played close until that fourth quarter, with 20 lead changes and 10 ties. Cleveland led by as many as 7 in the second quarter, but that was as close as they would get as Golden State picked up the pace and began to pull away at the end of the third. Curry had 37 points and 4 assists and there were four other Warriors in double figures, including reserve forward Leandro Barbosa who tallied 13 points.

Of the victory and being one step closer to the championship, Curry said, "A long season goes into these last moments of the Finals series. We fought hard all year and put ourselves in a good position now to go to Cleveland and hopefully close it out."

Cleveland was led by James, who pulled off another Finals triple double (40 points, 11 assists, 14 rebounds) and forward Tristan Thompson added 19. Notably absent for most of the game was center Timofey Mosgov, who played only 9 minutes after a 28 point performance in Game 4.

Winners of Game 5 have a 35-8 record in the NBA Finals. The Warriors now lead 3-2 in the best of seven series. Golden State hopes to see more confetti as the series continues in Cleveland on Tuesday night, when the Warriors take on the Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena in Game 6.
