MENDOZA DEFEATS MELINDO BY 6TH ROUND TECHNICAL DECISION

PhilBoxing.com

Javier Mendoza successfully defended his International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Flyweight belt against his challenger, Milan Melindo of the Philippines by a 6th round Technical Decision.

A severe cut in the left eye of Mendoza prompted Referee Gerard White to stop the contest at the 2:39 mark of the 6th round, heeding the advice of the ring physician who assessed the cut during the scheduled 12 round championship bout.

The cut was caused by an accidental head butt from the two who actively fought in the first 6 rounds of an exciting and tiring scuffle at the Campo Nuevo Ensenada in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

The fight was decided in the scores of the judges at ringside through six, which Mendoza won by a tally of 59-52, 60-52 and 60-52.

Mendoza was not the only one who suffered a cut due to an accidental clashing of heads by both fighters who showed plenty of fighting in the inside.

Melindo was also cut in his right eye the early moments of the 6th, he was deemed fit to continue fighting until the unfortunate accident later in the round.

The Filipino boxer also drew the ire of Referee White, after repeatedly throwing low blows. A third infraction in the 5th angered White who yelled at Melindo to ?keep it up? and which also forced him to deduct a point from the disappointed challenger, after a pair of warnings in the 1st and 4th rounds.

The champion was relentless at pursuing his challenger in the ring. Mendoza found success when he was able to force Melindo against the ropes, where he attacked him with hooks and straights.

Melindo fought back, countering his foe with hooks and uppercuts of his own but is noticeably less active compared to the very aggressive hometown fighter who was cheered by his countrymen and fans with every combination that he threw and landed.

Mendoza improved his record to 24 wins (19 KOs) against 2 defeats and a draw. This was his first title defense after winning the world championship last year.

Melindo suffered his second loss in 34 fights. Both of his defeats are from fighting for a world title. He lost to Juan Francisco Estrada for the WBO and WBA Flyweight belt in 2013 in Macao, China and tonight against Mendoza in Mexico.
