NBA Playoffs -- Warriors wallop Grizzlies, 98-78, snatch 3-2 series lead

PhilBoxing.com

OAKLAND -- It was just few days ago when the Golden State Warriors appeared to be done following Memphis Grizzlies' dominant games 2 and 3 of their Western Conference semifinals.

Panic was definitely felt here in the Bay Area.

But after winning Game 4 to tie the best-of-7 affair, the Warriors dominated Game 5 and regained home court advantage following a 98-78 beat down on Wednesday night at the Oracle Arena here in downtown Oakland.

Memphis benched Tony Allen for tonight's contest due to a nagging hamstring injury that caused him to miss the last 9 games of the regular season. His defensive presence was noticeably missed as the Warriors made 38 of 81 field goals (46.9 percent), including 14 of 30 from 3-point range (46.7 percent).

The Grizzlies came out firing in the first quarter and took an early 23 to 12 lead. But that didn't last long as newly-minted MVP Steph Curry caught fire, shooting 4 of 6 from behind the line, and Golden State claimed the lead 26-25 heading into the second quarter.

Curry made 6 of 13 threes to finish with 18 points. He also had a playoffs career-high of six steals, seven rebounds and seven dimes. Klay Thompson snapped out from his shooting funk and led the Warriors with 21 points. Harrison Barnes added 14 points.

Golden State outscored Memphis 29 to 6 on fast break points and held the Grizzlies to 39 percent in a collective defensive effort.

"You feel the energy from the crowd," Steph Curry said "It was a cool moment."

Marc Gasol scored 18 points on 8 for 22 from the field and 12 boards, Zach Randolph pitched in 13 points and 10 boards, but scored only 2 points in all of the second half.

Mike Conley said "They're moving the ball. They're getting a lot more penetration. Everybody." Conley contributed 13 points in about 33 minutes of play.

Memphis hope to make some key adjustments for Game 6 and very optimistic for Tony Allen's return for Game 6 on Friday, 15 of May 2015, 6:30 PST tip off. (RM)
