CHICAGO -- The New York Knicks, the worst team in the NBA this season with a dismal 14-53 record pulled a Madison Square Garden shocker on Tuesday night and outlasted the San Antonio Spurs in overtime, 104-100.
Langston Galloway and Alexey Shved starred in stunning reversal by scoring 22 and 21 points, respectively, against the reigning and defending NBA champions. Galloway hit 10-of-18 shots while Schved went 6-of-14 from the field and 8-for-12 from the free throw line.
Galloway and Schved also combined 11 assists and 7 rebounds while starting in the Knicks' backcourt..
Trailing 59-46 after Danny Green drilled a 3 off a Tony Parker assist, the Knicks went on a 22-16 run to close the gap at 75-68 after three quarters. The Knicks then forced overtime by outhustling the Spurs in the final 12 minutes, 28-21.
New York fell behind early in the extra session but after Parker handed San Antonio a 98-96 cushion, the Knicks outscored the Spurs 8-2 the rest of the way to preserve the victory.
"We didn't respect the game. We didn't respect our opponent. It was a pathetic performance, and I hope every player is embarrassed," a disappointed Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich told reporters, including ESPN, after San Antonio dropped to 41-25 and 7th place in the Western Conference,
Tony Parker and Tim Duncan combined to make 15-of-32 field goals to lead the Spurs with 21 and 17 points, respectively. But San Antonio made only 36 of 94 field goals overall (38.3 percent) and went just 3-for-14 from 3-point range.
The Spurs also had five fewer assists than the Knicks (22) and were outrebounded, 50-49. (HDS)
