DE LA HOYA TO VISIT PHILIPPINES AFTER MAYWEATHER FIGHT
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 24 Apr 2007
World light middleweight champion Oscar De La Hoya says he plans to visit the Philippines after his ?The World Awaits? showdown with undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr on May 6 (Manila Time) in what is certain to be one of the biggest and most amticipated fights in the history of boxing.
De La Hoya spoke of his plans to visit the Philippines in a conversation with Dyan Castillejo of the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN at his training camp in Puerto Rico where De La Hoya said earlier he had been energized by working out with emerging Filipino ring sensations Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista and AJ ?Bazooka? Banal who will be featured on the May 5 blockbuster fight card.
The undefeated WBO No. 1 ranked Bautista with a record of 22-0, 17 KO?s battles No. 2 ranked Sergio Medina of Mexico in a title eliminator while Banal who is also undefeated with a 12-0-1, 10 KO?s record faces tough Juan Alberto Rosas who has 22 KO?s in 25 wins and only 2 defeats. ABS-CBN which has the exclusive rights for ?The World Awaits? which will be telecast over Channel 2 will telecast the Bautista-Medina fight and are reportedly making arrangements to also carry the Banal-Rosas fight.
De La Hoya said his plan to visit Manila was in connection with the World Cup of boxing between Mexico and the Philippines which is likely to be staged in August or September this year.
De La Hoya said ?I?ll be going to the Philippines after this fight on May 5. We have to bond together and then fight for our country.? He said the World Cup is ?great for the sport of boxing and now what we want to do is the Philippines against Mexico with Mexico defending the World Cup? which they won defeating Thailand two years ago.
De La Hoya said ?we want to do it in the Philippines and I think it will be a big event in the Philippines.?
