2015 NBA All-Star Weekend -- Team World trips Team USA in Rising Stars Challenge By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Sun, 15 Feb 2015 ![]() NEW YORK -- Under the bright lights of the biggest stage in the world, the young starts of the NBA squared off in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge. Team World defeated Team USA 121-112 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday night. In years past, the contest pitted rookies vs. sophomores, East vs. West, and this year offered yet another spin. The new format featured ten first and second year players from the U.S. against ten first and second year players from around the world. This is a nod both the growing global popularity of the NBA and the strong international representation on the current rosters. The World team was led by game MVP Andrew Wiggins of the Minnesota Timberwolves. The first pick of the 2014 draft, Wiggins had 22 points and 6 rebounds. The native Canadian has won three consecutive Western Conference Rookie of the Month awards and is a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year. Team World led at the end of the first 20 minute half, 69-67. Team USA kept it competitive in the second half, taking the lead at the start of the period before Team World regained the edge with 11:22 remaining in the contest. They would lead the rest of the way. Team World members Giannis Antetokounmpo (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Rudy Gobert (18 points, 12 rebounds) each notched double-doubles. Gobert also had 3 blocked shots. Team USA was led by the pair Victor Oladipo and Zach LaVine, who each had 22 points. On playing in the Rising Stars Challenge, Wiggins said, "I love being out there. It was all fun. It was competitive, but it was fun too. I think we gave the fans and all the people watching something to watch, some entertainment." Indeed, the match up was a preview of tomorrow evening's slam dunk competition. All four participants (Antetokounmpo, LaVIne, Oladipo, and Mason Plumlee) played in tonight's game. All-Star Weekend continues on Saturday with the State Farm All-Star Saturday night, which will include the Sprite Slam Dunk and the much anticipated Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, which has one of the most competitive fields in recent history.
