NBA -- Whiteside's triple-double dooms Bulls By Adeline Deladisma PhilBoxing.com Mon, 26 Jan 2015 ![]() CHICAGO -- About an hour before the Heat-Bulls tip-off, Hassan Whiteside left the court after the pregame shootaround and stopped to sign autographs for a group of kids hanging over the Section 120 railing. As he entered the tunnel, Whiteside told security that "they thought I was James Ennis," his Miami Heat teammate. "Not sure how since he's 6'6" and I'm 7 feet." Miami brought the heat to the United Center on Sunday afternoon and beat the Chicago Bulls, 96-84 in front of a sellout crowd, led by the almost anonymous young center, who garnered the first triple-double of his career with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 12 blocked shots, a Miami franchise record. The Heat led for most of the contest, starting off shooting 52.2 percent n the first quarter. They cooled off a bit in the second but still led 48-38 at the half, holding the Bulls to 31.1 percent from the field. Their test came in the third quarter, which has almost nightly been their toughest quarter all season and where they've failed a number of times to maintain their level of play and squandered a halftime lead. Each time the Bulls made a push in the last half, the Heat seemed to have an answer. Notably in the fourth quarter, along with Whiteside's strong showing, Dwyane Wade scored 12 points, with the pair scoring all but 2 of Miami's 22 points in the final stanza. It was a solid team win, with balanced scoring from the starting line up. Chris Bosh (20 points, 7 rebounds) and Mario Chalmers (15 points, 5 assists) each scored in double figures and Luol Deng, in his first return to the United Center since being traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers last season before landing with the Heat, added a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds). For the Bulls, All Star forward Pau Gasol had 13 points and 17 rebounds. Derrick Rose added 19 points despite going 0-6 from three point range. The Heat picked up Whiteside last November and he has played in 17 contests for the Heat since mid-December, averaging 7.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game. His presence in the paint for Miami is something head coach Erik Spoelstra certainly appreciates. "His size clearly gives us a different dimension. It's a credit to him for putting in the work, embracing the work. That's something this team very much needs," said Spoelstra. And those autograph-seeking youngsters? You can bet they now know who Hassan Whiteside is. Photo: Hassan Whiteside (R) was all over Pau Gasol and the Chicago Bulls yesterday at the United Center.
