Les locks in WBA Oceania title with home town victory over Barbosa.

In front of a packed house at the Home Hill memorial Hall, local boy, Les Sherrington made a triumphant return to the Burdekin and set up a potential blockbuster bout with fellow Aussie star Daniel Geale in the new year.

Sherrington out pointed Brazil's Samir Santos Barbosa winning by unanimous decision.

On two of the judges score cards the Home Hill fighter was a 100-89 victor while on the final card he was awarded the bout 100-90.

"I'm very happy with the result," Les Sherrington said.

"I believe it's probably the most disciplined and clinical I've ever fought in my entire career.

"I always felt in control but he was very willing and had knock out power so staying disciplined was crucial for me.

"I scored a knock down in the early rounds but he kept coming like all champion fighters do, thankfully I had an answer for every question he asked me.

Sherrington's trainer manager Brendon Smith added.

"Les fought a terrific fight.

"He stuck to the game plan, landed good clean shots and defensively he did a great job to negate Barbosa's power."

Sherrington picked up the WBA Oceania title and a top fifteen ranking from the victory.

"It's great to win another belt and it puts me in the frame to earn a shot at a big fight against some one like Daniel Geale.

"We have some great Australian fighters in the middle weight division and Daniel has fought and beaten Jarrod Fletcher and Anthomy Mundine now I feel it's my turn.

"With my World rating and Daniel's status in world boxing wouldn't it be great if we could fight for a World title eliminator.

"I would love to bring that fight to Home Hill or some where in North Queensland anyway.

"The support I had from the public against Barbosa was incredible.

"Special praise needs to go John And Kirstin Bonano for all their efforts promoting this show.

"you guys made a dream come true for me.

"I dreamt of this day as a kid walking to and from school at Home Hill State High.

"I can't say thank you enough, to come back here and win a fight like that is in front of so many family and friends is something I will never forget."
