WALTERS AXES DONAIRE IN 6TH

PhilBoxing.com

CARSON, CA ? Nicholas 'The Axeman' Walters of Jamaica fulfilled his promise to finish off Nonito Donaire Jr inside the distance when he stopped Donaire with an looping right to the head of Donaire towards the end of the 6th round that cut Donaire falling head first to the canvas to become the new WBA featherweight super champion at the StubHub Center Saturday night. Time of stoppage was at 2:59 of the sixth round.

In the opening round, both Donaire and Walters showed extreme focus and sharpness with both fighters eluding each other's power punches. Towards the end of the round, Nonito, who was greeted with a thunderous applause by the Stubhub crowd owing to his two previous victories from this arena, landed with a good left that probably got him the round..

At the start of the second round, Donaire connects with a couple of lefts, one to the head and one to the body and then a couple of rights. The action was halted momentarilty when Donaire connected with a low blow. Donaire continued to dominate Walters the entire round finishing up with left right combos as the crowd became alive chanting Donaire's name.

Suddenly in the third, out of nowhere, Walters connected with a right uppercut that buckled Donaire's knees who placed his hands to the canvas to gain balance for a knockdown by Walters whose power changed the complexion of the fight in an instant.

Using effective jabbing and measured aggressiveness, Walters controlled the tempo in the 4th as Donaire's face became more red due to the cut he suffered in the upper right side of his head.

A toe to toe action in the 5th ensued with both fighters connecting solid punches. It is evident though that Walters' punches caused more damage as another cut was formed on Donaire's left eyebrow.

The end came at 2:59 of the sixth round when Walters hit Donaire with that lopping right to the head. Donaire tried to beat the count, but with rubbery legs, Referre Raul Caiz Jr waved off the fight.

?He beat the shit out of me,? Donaire later said after the fight as he acknowledged Walters' exceptional skills and power. ?You're my favorite fighter now,? Donaire told Walters as Walters also complimented Donaire for skills in the ring.

Donaire trailed on all scorecards after the 5th round, 49-45, 48-46 and 48-46.

Walters threw 122 power puches to Donaire's 110, connecting 41 to Donaire's 36.

Walters registered his 25th consecutive victory with 21 knockouts while Donaire went down to his third defeat in 36 fights.
