Winky's Night PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Jun 2006 OPENING ROUND. Executives of the Golden Boy Promotions, led by Eric Gomez, are set to arrive in the country on June 27. Of course, he will be here to personally see to it that Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista gets more than his share of support from them. Leon Panoncillo, the WBO Asia Pacific top honcho, jets in on June 24...RP flyweight champ Jojo Bardon lost via close unanimous decision to Japanese Trash Nakanuma in Tokyo the other day...I've been getting tons of emails following my initial revelation about a Filipino fighter who will vie for a world crown sometime in September. Until involved parties cross the T's and sign the dotted lines, that boxer shall remain nameless...The third judge who will officiate the Pacquiao-Larios fight is Thailand's Noppharat Sricharoen... ***** Yesterday's fight between Jermain Taylor and Winky Wright for the undisputed middleweight title ended up in a draw, but it seems it was the smallish Winky's marketability who shot up even more following his gallant stand. Judge Chuck Giampa saw it 115-113 for Taylor, Ray Hawkins penned it 115-113 for Wright, while the third judge Melvina Lathan saw it a draw at 114-114 making it a split draw. I was scoring the fight, and had Winky Wright the winner 115-113. You just have to see the two boxers' reactions after the fight, and after the verdict was announced, and you'd have an inkling who felt what. Winky, clearly, was very dissatisfied with the draw verdict, while Taylor seemed very much content and relieved with it. Now, you do the behavioral math. Make no mistake about it, it was a pretty close fight, and if anyone ever decides to take a license on becoming a boxing judge, I would highly recommend watching that fight on tape. That was one true gift to boxing, a fight between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters. COMPUBOX. Here are the facts and figures: Jermain Taylor threw 703 punches and 308 jabs while Winky unleashed 643 punches and 335 jabs. However, Wright connected more often (35 percent of the time to Taylor's 23 percent). Reports said neither fighter has thrown more punches in a fight in his career. Wow! Do I hear a rematch? "I give it up to Winky Wright. He threw his punches in bunches," Taylor told HBO's Larry Merchant after the fight. "He had a great jab. I didn't think his jab was that fast.In the later rounds it started getting bad to where I can't see. He was running like he had the fight won. I stayed there and tried to get him." Gary Shaw, Wright's promoter, was more unequivocal: "Winky gave him a boxing lesson tonight." When asked if he wanted a rematch, Taylor, his left eye swollen closed, said: "Yes, sir, I'll fight him again. I'll fight a rematch." Wright, however, wants a rematch with one major condition: "I don't want a rematch if I have to come here and get that kind of decision." Apparently, Wright will fight Taylor only if the event is held anywhere except the latter's home turf. Click here for a complete listing of columns by this author.
