FEARLESS

I am Deeply Honored? I am Grateful

I was chosen as one of the Boxer of the Year awardees at the 10th Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde Memorial Boxing Awards Thursday night, March 24, 2010 at Harbor Garden Tent of Hotel Sofitel and this is another event that made me proud that I chose to be a professional boxer.

The affair is in commemoration of the 25th death anniversary and 75th birth anniversary of Pinoy boxing legend Gabriel Elorde who during his lifetime has brought honor to the Philippines with his boxing prowess and skills.

The award is an exclusive gathering of world, international and Philippine champions in the year 2009 and I am very happy because the organizers have seen the works I?ve done during the year just ended for the sake of the country and for the whole Filipino boxing community so they decided to have me included in the list of the honorees.

I accepted the Boxer of the Year award with fellow champions Brian Viloria (WBO Strawweight), Donnie Nietes (IBF Jr Flyweight), Rodel Mayol (WBC Light Flyweight) and Marvin Sonsona (WBO Flyweight).

My good friend Manny Pacquiao led the batch of honorees as he was honored as the Boxer of the Decade for his extraordinary feat as the only boxer in history who championed 7 belts in 7 different weight divisions. As I said before, I will be forever thankful to the Pacman for opening the international doors to aspiring Pinoy boxers who wanted to conquer world boxing arena for the sake of the country and for personal glory.

I am grateful to the Elorde Sports Foundation because they have always given professional boxers the much needed recognition and encouragement even if there are risks associated with our chosen profession. I admit after my not so successful stint in Las Vegas against Eric Morel, I am at the crossroads. But, I am never bitter even if the judges ruled against me because after the fight, I was given the chance to spend more quality time with my family. I was able to enjoy being a boxing fan too and rejoiced with the rest of the world during Manny Pacquiao?s conquest of Joshua Clottey watching the fight live at Dallas Stadium with my wife and many more Pacquiao fans.

Many have asked me what will be my next step after the Morel fight. Well, I don?t know yet. I am still weighing my options but what is most important is that I am boxer and I have given my best with every fight. The outcome of every fight is just the fringe benefit. It?s the happiness of seeing my countrymen proud with what I had achieved that tops the prize.
