OLYMPIC THOUGHTS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 04 Aug 2008 Should I watch the Olympics? I have been asking myself this question for the past few months. We only have one boxer who managed to qualify ? light flyweight Harry Tanamor. A sporting disaster already in a country that fancies itself as a boxing power in Asia. The odds are stacked against him. His tormentor in the 2007 World Amateur Boxing Championships - Zuo Shiming of China ? is one of those tipped to win the gold and will be fighting on home soil. Our other bets with an outside chance for a medal ? Tae Kwon Do jins Mary Antoinette Rivero and Tshomlee Go - also have to compete against overwhelming odds. The host China is also a reason why the upcoming games have a pall of gloom. China has been linked to human rights violations and the ongoing genocide in Darfur. Steven Spielberg did resign as artistic adviser for the opening ceremonies. This would be the most politicized Olympics since the 1936 Games held in Berlin, Germany. The sporting world itself has been tainted with top athletes resorting to steroid use and other unsavory tricks. Judging in amateur boxing has been appalling. That would be an understatement of Olympic proportions. Should I watch the Olympics? Yes. Because Anthony Villanueva and Mansueto ?Onyok? Velasco will be watching it too.
