Pacman’s trainer on ABS/CBN’s hefty-priced tickets

PhilBoxing.com
Sun, 23 Apr 2006

At 11 p.m. last April 21, 2006 at the Rumble at the Bay, I asked boxing trainer, the renowned Boboy Fernandez (assistant trainer of Freddie Roach on Manny Pacqauio, and a fellow Ilonggo) if the clamor of the unwashed of our society to have a glimpse of the Pacquiao tussle with Oscar Larios on July 2, 2006 will be heeded so these financially handicapped fellows can avail the cheapest tickets their worn-out pocket can afford.

Boboy (not Buboy, as the nickname he personally registered on my my cellular phone’s address book) told me in the vernacular: ”Malabo gid na matabo kay si ABS/CBN abi ang may control dira” (“Its impossible because it's ABS/CBN that calls the shots).

This only shows that Manny Pacquaio’s name appended as a co-promoter of this T.V Network is only an embellishment if not embarrassment. Since he is toothless to solve this tickets’ imbroglio. But, let’s go back to Economics 101. This is what we call market forces of supply and demand. They are the ones who mold the mindset of the overlords of this T.V entity-turned-boxing promotion outfit -- which dip its finger on this lucrative and hottest money-making industry. It means as long as there will be takers for the $1000 or P 51,000 (Philippine currency) “royalty” seats, and the P1000 nosebleed bleachers, then any Tom, Dick, & Gorio (since that proverbial Harry already died because of financial problems) can’t do anything.

Manigas na lang kayo dyan!

Jesus Christ! The Games & Amusement Board confab last April 19 -22, 2006 was fabulous.

My plaudits to the GAB people specifically Commissioner Alex A. Paglumotan –who was the brain and the work horse in the success of this event.

Since the inception of the GAB (that supervises and regulates professional sports like basketball, cycling, golf, billiards, wrestling, and boxing) in 1951, this was the first time our country has hosted this boxing convention where delegates like promoters, judges, referees, journalists, sanctioning bodies’ entities, to name a few from here and abroad discussed the new rules, trend, and intricacies of the Sweet Science.

Mr Emmanuel C. Flores (GAB’s chief of the boxing division) waxed his sentiments by saying: “to reckon with the number of years that I stayed in the Board with confidence and optimism… that event like this became possible... with the present members (three commissioners) of the Board, my profound thanks to them that my dream became a reality, a solid Philippine boxing convention for all.”

Well said, Mr. Dyed-in the-wool boxing bureaucrat who have seen decades of service at the boxing commission.

Now it’s not only Bacolod but the entire Pinoyland will be prouder about Commissioner Paglumotan. Notwithstanding, the eloquent Chairman Eric Buhain who conceived this convention stuff with Toto Alex P. when they were airborne through a plane, as told to me by the Commissioner.

I got a lot of thought-provoking topics that I will be going to write in my future columns. That GAB conclave was really productive. I don't need anymore to brainstorm what subjects I am going to jot every time Saturday comes nearer. Unlike topics in politics here in my acrimonious province in the Republic of Pangasinan where it was a breeze to write because of their abundance like corruptions, governmental idiocies, and other kind of exposes and scandals on my two political columns.
Boy, there was no substitute for my t?te-?-t?te with promoters, trainers, referees, judges, and other personalities during that three-day convention.

See you on my next column for another boxing Rock & Roll.
