BOXING WRITERS' GROUP TO BE FORMED PhilBoxing.com Fri, 31 Mar 2006 For and in the greater interest of our Filipino pro boxers here and abroad and most of all to our millions of compatriots living in different parts of the globe, a boxing writers' group is set to be organized by all Filipino boxing journalists. We already have the very informative Philboxing.com website and is seen and widely read daily by worldwide readers which caters to the highlights and day-to-day achievements of our world class fighters and for the updated information to common Filipinos worldwide. This soon-to-be-formed boxing writers' association is to be named "BOXING WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES" (BWAP). This will be similar but not necessarily patterned after the one in the United States, the Boxing Writers Association of America. Our thrust here is to solidify the strenght of our pro boxing journalists who have been very active in the service and campaign for info drive for and behalf of our pro boxing heroes in the country. The idea of doing this was first articulated to this writer by the prolific boxing writer and a good friend Salven Lagumbay of Philippine Daily Inquirer. Both of us will be co-counders here and with the support of our fellow sports writers, so soon we will be establishing this and probably take our oath of commitment before the GAB Chairman Eric R.Buhain during the boxing convention here on April 19-22, 2006 at the Hotel Hyatt and Casino Manila. I feel a great desire to push through with this one.It's not for ourselves but for both the boxing communities and the champions themselves. In our brief conversation over the phone, Salven Lagumbay and this writer entertained the idea of having either Ronnie Nathanielsz of the Manila Standard or 'The Dean' Quinito Henson of Philippine Star as its pioneering President. Consistent boxing writers like Recah Trinidad and Al Mendoza of the Inquirer, Nick Giongco of Manila Bulletin, Abac Cordero of Philippine Star, Virgi Romano of Abante, Jimmy Cantor of the Philippine Sportswriters Association, Ed Alinea of the SCOOP Manila, Dong Secuya of Philboxing.com and Mannypacquiao.ph, Ed Picson of Bulletin, Emmanuel Villaruel of The Freeman, Erwin Lirazan of Superbalita, Rico Navarro of The Freeman, Rommel Manlosa of Sunstar, among others will be invited to be the members of the group's directorate. Maybe North Cotabato Governor Emmanuel Pinol can be the group's consultant as well as Recah Trinidad. What a great idea to put together into one solid fold the cream of the crop in the country's boxing journalism. I have already relayed this brainchild to Chairman Buhain and he said "a sound thinking by the group and it is for the good of the Philippine boxing industry in the country as it is long overdue." Very well-said because these people have been there for so long a time. It is not only attuned to the demand of the times but rather a perfect blending in matters of pro boxing development and its continued success before the global market of competition. Time is of the essence for this. Maybe a week from now there will be positive developments as to the stablishment of the same. I even volunteered to Salven to come up with the ready draft of its Constitution and By-Laws for the benefit of fellow writers.While I must agree that, its not easy to organize a group such as this, but with one common purpose I know its doable under given circumstance. Co-founder Salven Lagumbay will be in-charge of the membership for the group, and he will make sure only legitimate boxing writers will be registered, who will eventually be issued ID's with the BWAP logo on it.
