BACOLOD'S MASSKARA CHAMPION TO PERFORM DURING THE 1ST PHILIPPINE BOXING CONVENTION PhilBoxing.com Tue, 14 Mar 2006 The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) will host the "1st Philippine Annual Boxing Convention" this coming 18-21st of April 2006 in the City of Manila. The event will surely lose its luster and significance without the participation of several sectors who will give added colors to this most awaited event. Top local government officials from known cities and provinces in the country have already signified their intention to send some of their sports coordinators to attend to the said event. The 4-day convention will be held at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Manila. The agency has already secured the needed percentage in matters of preparation, and it has almost reached the stage of "almost all set scenario". We are now in the final stages of the preparation and are highly confident to reach our goal sooner. And this is for the best interest of all of us Filipinos, especially those who are actively involved in the sports of professional boxing in the country. As the convention date comes near, final touches and some oversights are matters that are being highly considered. We do not want to miss anything in so far as the mechanics on how to run and manage the whole event is concerned. The ever supportive Office of the President has seriously focused their attention on the GAB, watching us to deliver successfully this priority project of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. In this case, the incumbecy of the Games and Amusements Board under the able leadership of Chairman Eric R. Buhain lauded the commitment given by the City of Bacolod through Mayor Evilio R. Leonardia and Bacolod lone district representative Monico O. Puentevella. In a recent communication received by the GAB, after a personal representation made by this writer to the Honorable Mayor of the "City of Smiles", they have approved the sending of its "2006 Masskara Champions" to Manila City on the 19th of April, to perform during the "Gala Night and Awarding Ceremonies" of the convention. And the good thing is, the city government of Bacolod, with the financial backing of Congressman Monico O. Puentevella, will shoulder the Masskara team's transportation expenses which is a big help to the agency and to this special pro sports program in itself. Worthy to mention is the supportive gesture of Ms. Emogene Kana-an, the tourism council head of the city. The Bacolod City Masskara Festival has gained international prominence and is known as one of the most attractive festivals among the event-filled Fiesta Islands of the Philippines, according to the Department of Tourism. Bacolod's native cultural festivity which is being celebrated yearly during the month of October started ahead of many other fiesta cultural presentations way back in the early 1980s. Historical facts would tell us, that due to the collapse of the "sugar industry" in that period (where Bacolod was known as the sugar bowl of the Philippines), suffered a terrible set back. Thus, the establishment of the "Masskara Festival" to purposely and intentionally deviate the people from the hardships of economic life. Since then, the Masskara Festival of the city became a by-word to domestic and international tourists. Surely, their presence before the boxing convention will bring fantastic entertainment to the participants here and abroad. A great opportunity for Mayor Leonardia's beautiful city to be showcased not only for entertainment and fiesta attractions, but for its local and the country's tourism. We have to show to our visitors and international boxing communities the best in us. By the way, Secretary Ace Durano of DOT and his dynamic Asec for Sports and Wellness Cynthia Carrion, our good friend, will play a vital role in this affair as one of our leading partners. Of course, ditto to Mayor Lito Atienza of Manila City, who will be our convention co-host. Other salient points of the upcoming GAB-sponsored boxing convention here in the country's capital city, the City of Manila, will be written in this column on a day to day basis. Questions and other matters of interest to both the would be delegates and participants will be accommodated through the GAB Secretariat at our main office in Makati City, Philippines.
