The ever dynamic Chairman of the Games and Amusements Board Eric R. Buhain is now in Tokyo, Japan for a four-day official trip in order to supervise the conduct of the kYOWA-NAKAJEMA fight. The fight is a World Boxing Council (WBC) title match in the strawweight category to be held on Jan. 9 in Yokohama, Japan. Eagle Kyowa, originally from Thailand according to his boxer's profile, is now a Japanese and is the crown holder of the WBC strawweight division. He will do battle against number 8 contender Ken Nakajema, also of Japan.

The good Chairman of the GAB will be the fight supervisor as commissioned by the WBC. Buhain is at the same time a sitting official of the WBC's directorate. "I am very appreciative of the fact that the WBC heirarchy has given me its full trust to supervise the conduct of this very important title bout here in Japan," Buhain related to this writer in a long distance call. Job well done Sir!

Year 2006, known as "The Year of the Fire Dog" is a significant year for the Games and Amusements Board, as an agency tasked to regulate and supervise the conduct of all professional sports in the Philippines. The reason being is that, this year we have lined up, as unanimously approved by the Board, remarkable projects that would surely enhance not only the image of our agency but to create avenues to promote other areas of top pro sports in the country. The GAB Board, including its technical manpower and experts are already on the first phase of realizing, as conceptualized, the first ever "1st GAB Philippine Boxing Convention" to be held in Manila. And the tentative target date would be on the second week of April this year. Enjoining all the sectors involved in pro-boxing in the Philippines and some interrelated agencies of the national bureaucracies, we could now smell that the convention will become a reality. Our GAB people are now 100% solidly committed to back up the Board in this historic undertaking and we bet that it will also become a 100% success.

The first quarter of 2006 is also the target date for the release, for the first time since 1951, the Games and Amusements Board "Manual of Operations". The pioneering manual are authored by the incumbent members of the present Board. The GAB Manual of Operations has consolidated all aspects of the supervisory and regulatory powers vested to the GAB by the Office of the President and all provisions of laws and orders and policies encompassing all pro sports in the Philippines.

This year also, will determine whether or not the World Boxing Council (WBC) and the World Boxing Association (WBA) conventions for the year 2007 will be held here in the Philippines. We have submitted our serious bid to both international boxing sanctioning bodies and the confirmation of such will be made known to the reading public. Logically, the success of the envisioned boxing convention here this summer will showcase the best that we have and will mark the Philippines as a potential and viable venue for international boxing conventions afterwards.

Lastly, the incumbent Board of the GAB is determined to strengthen the agency's powers to supervise and regulate the conduct of all pro sports in the country within the limits of the law without fear or favor to no one. Along this line, Board Chairman Buhain once stated: "We in the GAB Board will see to it that we are behind and in support all the way for the promotion and protection of all professional sports and its players. However, we will not allow a few people to make a mockery of professional sports ..."
