GAB Updates: Annual Philippine Boxing Summit Planned, Case of Japanese Amputee Boxer and WBE/USBC News PhilBoxing.com Wed, 23 Nov 2005 The Games and Amusements Board ably headed by Chairman Eric R. Buhain and the two active Commissioners handed a unanimous approval during the last Board meeting on November 17, 2005 the holding of a trail-blazing GAB 1st Annual Boxing Convention to be held in the City of Makati, Philippines. The doable idea was presented before the Board by the good Chairman himself. Chairman Buhain's brainchild will gather into one place all professional boxing promoters, managers, trainers, referees, judges and ring officials including media people who have done many significant contributions in the past for the promotion of Philippine boxing here and abroad. In the broader context, we are yet to receive the go-signal from the Office of the Honorable Executive Secretary Eduardo R. Ermita for the support of Malaca?ang and all other inter-related governmental agencies in the national level of governance such as the Department of Tourism among others. Our target date is before the end of the 1st quarter of 2006 or in April of 2006. Once realized, this will serve as a springboard for the GAB's serious intention to the hosting of either the WBC or WBO conventions in 2007. And to reciprocate those people who have laboured so hard and shared their valuable talents, expertise and resources for the development of professional boxing, the occassion will give due recognition to all deserving would be recipients. It would also be a good timing for a reunion among the top honchos of world boxing sanctioning bodies all over the globe as they would be invited as VIP guests. Just wait for latest announcements through this column. This early, we are welcoming those who would want to be a part of this. ..................................... The case of Nao Tsuchiyama of Japan, an amputee boxer who wants to be a professional boxer in the Philippines, has been laid on the table by the GAB Board for a while. While the intention is noble, we feel that we need to study carefully the ramifications as well as the future cause and effect of the case since this involves sensitive issues. We do not want to invite trouble in the future. We are here to regulate and supervise with competence all conducts of pro sports in the country, especially in pro boxing which is now considered the leading sport among Filipino enthusiasts and fans. We have asked them, especially Mr. Higaki Yusuke, Nao's manager, to produce some needed documents and data from Japan Boxing Commission as well as recommendations from the global boxing bodies to include details of history involving boxers who had fought in international level of pro boxing with the same situation as Nao's. The long and the short of it, we do not want to compromise and put the GAB at risk. "The Office of the President relies so much on the GAB to be competent in our dealings with pro sports," Chairman Buhain stated during the Board session last week. "That's the very reason why we are here as the Board, " he added. ..................................... Mr. Zhi W. Yang, as Chairman/Director of the newly GAB accredited World Boxing Empire (WBE) and the United States Boxing Council (USBC) here in the Philippines represented by Mr. Dante Almario had emailed Chairman Eric R. Buhain and I quote: "Dear Mr.Buhain, I need to notify you an important reform of WBE, the United States Boxing Council (USBC) has partnered with us. Anyone can fight for the USBC championship rank on USBC, not just United States residents. I look forward to see Filipino boxers fight for USBC title. I believe this will strenghten the WBE/USBC influence in the world." Best Regards, Zhi W.Yang Hope that this communication coming from the WBE Chairman and Director of USBC will be taken cognizance by our Filipino boxing promoters. Just for your information.
