A PROTEST? MAYOL SHOULD BE THE ONE FILING IT! PhilBoxing.com Thu, 04 Mar 2010  Latest reports from Fightnews.com indicated that Hector Garcia, the manager of Omar Nino Romero of Guadalajara, Mexico is planning to file a protest to contest the final decision made last Saturday night by Mauricio Sulaiman of the WBC regarding the Mayol-Nino fight. The initial decision of the fight was a TKO win for Nino based on the erroneous decision of referee Vic Drakulich to proceed with a 10 count as Filipino champion Rodel Mayol laid on his back following two intentional and devilish acts from Omar Nino. The first one was a very low blow and the second one was a punch delivered clearly after the referee order him to stop. With all his experiences, it is quite obvious that Vic Drakulich made a huge mistake in deciding to do the count. I am not one to say that he did it to favor Nino and please the promoters who paid him to work the fight in spite of knowing that the punch was delivered after his order to stop. Drakulich is a fair referee, but he is human and he made a mistake, a huge mistake if I made add. Realizing the referee’s obvious mistake, Sulaiman in his capacity as the supervisor of the title fight decided to review the tape and after viewing the sequences that led to the knockout both in real time speed and slow motion, Sulaiman decided that the TKO be reversed and instead declared the results as “technical draw” allowing Mayol to keep his title. Nino hit Mayol with a very low blow, way south of the border, so to speak. As Mayol reacted to the very painful results, Drakulich yelled “stop”. Perhaps Nino in the heat of battle failed to hear the order, or perhaps did not understand it as it was not given in “Spanish”. Be that as it may, Nino with bad intentions in mind charged Mayol, stepped on his foot to prevent him from stepping away and delivered a late and illegal left hook that landed flush on the chin of Mayol knocking him out cold. All the above happened after Drakulich, as I stated clearly gave a loud and a clear order for Nino to stop and even tried to restrain him from throwing a punch. Unfortunately, Drakulich was out of position and too slow in reacting following his verbal order allowing Nino to throw the illegal punch that knocked out Mayol. Now reports indicate that Hector Garcia is planning to file a protest? Should it not be the other way? Team Mayol should be the one filing a protest to change the decision to a “disqualification”. That is the best decision to be given as clearly, a late punch was delivered, and intentionally at that. If Hector Garcia proceeds with what he said he will do, I must say that the guy is just full of it. How can he even think that Nino’s acts were legal? Is he blind or something? How can he accused Mayol of “playing dead” when he did not know the actual condition of Mayol as he laid flat on his back? Truth be told, Mayol was totally unconscious as he hit the canvas. I know because as his cut man, I was the first person to get to him to do a quick assessment of his condition and revive him. I said it once and I say it again. It was I that initially asked Mayol to stay down and the ring doctor, Dr Nadia Beccerill when she finally came around, concurred with me. Mayol was simply in no condition to stand up and fight again that night. It is far better for Garcia to just shut up and concentrate on putting up the re-match as ordered by WBC. Oh along the way, it would help if he tells his boy, Nino to fight like a real Mexican, fair and square so that at an outside chance that he may beat Mayol on the re-match he can stand tall as true a Mexican champion. And, Garcia can be proud of him. But then again, that could only be a dream because if a re-match is made, regardless where they hold it, Mayol will beat the crap out of Nino. That can’t be helped.
