World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman believes that No. 6 ranked light flyweight contender Jonathan Taconing who lost a controversial 5th round technical decision to Thai champion Kompayan Porpramook deserves a shot at the WBC silver title.
Sulaiman responded quickly to a query from the Manila Standard after Taconing?s manager Johnny Elorde said that since his boxer had been denied an immediate rematch because of the WBC rules and regulations, he wanted the next best thing which is a fight for the vacant WBC Silver title.
Johnny Elorde told the Manila Standard that he wants to keep Taconing busy because even if he gets a title shot at the winner of the rematch between Porpramook and former champion Adrian Hernandez of Mexico, it would probably happen next year.
The WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman earlier informed us that Adrian Hernandez who lost the title to Porpramook by a 10th round TKO had two options which he will exercise in seeking a rematch which the WBC has to honor.
It was also pointed out that Hernandez was not given proper consideration in Thailand, was housed in what was described as a ?hot motel? and made to wait under the sun for almost two hours before the title fight.
In his prompt response to our questions about a possible Silver title fight, Sulaiman said he would do his best because Taconing ?deserves it.?
At the same time he informed is that the referee who officiated the Taconing-Porpramook title fight Jae Bong Kim ?will be rested for one year as a referee, I believe more for incompetence than bias.?
Ring Officials Review Committee chairman , veteran boxing judge Tom Kaczmarek who reviewed a DVD copy of the title fight between Porpramook and Taconing ?found that the fight should have been a draw, 47-47? although Kaczmarek conceded that ?the referee acted with some confusion in the 4th and 5th round.?
Sulaiman had asked for the review after Elorde told Sulaiman he was ?disappointed the way the fight ended? when Korean referee Jae Bong Kim stepped in and stopped the barrage of punches that Taconing was landing in the 5th round after he trapped the champion in a corner.?
