LAS VEGAS, NEVADA--Undefeated WBC no. 1 and OPBF minimumweight champion Rodel Mayol flies to Mexico tomorrow in time for his January 28 eliminator with Mexican Lorenzo Trejo during the WBC's Night of Champions in Cancun, Mexico.
Mayol, who has had some 108 rounds of sparring going into the fight, will be accompanied by trainer Brix Flores and Japanese trainer Miura. The group will have a stopver in Vancouver, Canada on their way to Mexico.
Yasuo Matsuoka, Mayol's Japanese manager, told this writer in an interview at the Thomas and Mack Center here that his ward is ready to go and should be able to win the fight. Matsuoka, accompanied by his Filipina wife Genara, was at ringside for yesterday's Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales battle won by the Filipino superstar.
The Mayol-Trejo bout, which is a 12-round eliminator with the winner advancing to challenge WBC champ Eagle Kyowa, is one of the featured bouts of the Night of Champions, which is expected to attract 100 past and present WBC world champions in one venue.
