Undefeated Filipino lightweight prospect Mercito 'No Mercy' Gesta (20-0-1, 10KO) made short work of Mexican veteran Ivan Valle (28-10-2, 24KO) with a 2nd round TKO victory at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in San Diego, CA Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).
Gesta sent Valle to the canvas twice in the first round and then pressed the attack in 2nd round with combinations as a wobbly Valle tried to stay on his feet. Referee Pat Russell waived off the fight at 26 seconds of the 2nd round after Valle's corner told the referee to stop the contest.
Gesta, from Mandaue City, Cebu but is now fighting out of San Diego, has now won nine straight bouts with six stoppages since fighting in the United States beginning in Aug. 2007 and is now looking forward to bigger fights ahead including a world title fight.
Before the Valle fight, Gesta challenged WBO Interim lightweight champion Michael Katsidis of Australia but Katsidis dismissed him and instead faces Juan Manuel Marquez for the WBA/WBO unified lightweight battle at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Nov. 27.
