TANZA, CAVITE--Sarangani's John Mark Apolinario, fighting out of the Yraola Boxing Gym, last night took the WBO Oriental superfly title with a superb display of boxing skills in outpointing the durable Vincent "Popeye" Palicte in the main event of the "Future Prospects 5" card here.
Presented by SGG Promotions in cooperation with Sampson Boxing LLC, the event was the second to be held here at the Arayata Sports Complex here.
The bout will be aired this Saturday, 1PM over RPN-9's "In This Corner" hosted by the popular and durable Ronnie Nathanielsz and sponsored by Tanduay, the no. 1 Rhum.
Apolinario worked behind laser-like jabs, and used his vaunted combinations and movements to frustrate the equally well-conditioned Palicte, a former WBC International titlist.
There were no knockdowns in the fight, but Apolinario was clearly the busier and better fighter after an exciting 12-round affair.
WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo personally awarded the Oriental belt to Apolinario. The victory, according to Panoncillo, will give Apolinario a slot in the WBO top 15 rankings.
In the co-feature, Indonesia's future star Daud Cino Yordan showed his brand of power boxing to Pinoy fans with a sixth-round annihilation of Christian Avila.
Yordan did not show his six-month layoff, looking sharp and tough all throughout, although he admitted he could have done better. The Indonesian fighter virtually did target practice on Avila, who kept moving around to avoid the heavy bombardments.
Yordan, who is promoted by Sampson "Picasso" Lewkowicz, has recently linked up with SGG Promotions for his future fights in the Philippines before another shot at a world title.
More to come...
