Teofimo Lopez Defeats Rolly Romero by Majority Decision to Become 3-Division World Champion

Teofimo Lopez silenced his doubters and etched his name into boxing history on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at T-Mobile Arena, overcoming early disaster to outpoint Rolando "Rolly" Romero and capture the WBA World Welterweight Championship. Coming off a bitter defeat to Shakur Stevenson, Lopez secured a world title in his third division via majority decision, taking cards of 116-112 from Tim Cheatham and 115-113 from Max DeLuca, while Glenn Feldman scored it a 114-114 draw.

The opening round offered a tense, tactical opening act as both men traded cautious jabs and exploratory counters. Romero, fighting in front of a raucous hometown Las Vegas crowd, fed off the arena's energy, but neither fighter landed anything of real consequence in the early minutes. Lopez quickly altered his strategy in the second, shifting his attention to Romero’s midsection. "The Takeover" pressed forward on the front foot, driving sharp jabs down low and following up with a crisp right hand that forced Romero onto his back foot.

The chess match deepened in the third. Romero jumped at nearly every one of Lopez’s feints, staying guarded as he searched for an opening to unleash his signature left hook. That patience paid off in the fourth when Romero unleashed his first real offensive surge, ripping a left hand up top and following it up with a heavy body shot to take the frame.

Disaster struck for Lopez in the fifth. Romero landed a crushing left hook that visibly wobbled the challenger, sending him reeling. Sensing blood, Romero swarmed with a furious barrage of power punches. The onslaught sliced open a deep cut over Lopez’s right eyebrow, leaving blood streaming down his face as the Las Vegas crowd roared for the local champion.

Faced with adversity, Lopez demonstrated remarkable resolve in the sixth, marching right back to the center of the ring to control the tempo while Romero retreated back into his shell, looking to time another counter.

The seventh produced high-stakes exchanges: Lopez landed a clean left-right combination, only for Romero to respond with a sharp counter right and cap the round with a stinging check hook right at the bell.

As the fight entered its second half, Romero’s low output began to catch up with him. He remained disciplined, looking for the one-punch knockout, but his inactivity allowed Lopez to sweep rounds through steady catch-and-counter work. The ninth saw another lull in action with neither man willing to commit fully, though Lopez’s busier jab earned him the nod.

Lopez took complete control in the tenth, punishing a non-committal Romero. A massive right hand from Lopez sent Romero into full retreat, and Lopez pursued him around the ring with fluid, unanswered combinations. Romero swung for the fences with a wild right hand in the eleventh that missed by inches, but Lopez stayed in full command, dictating range behind sharp one-two combinations as the champion’s title defense slipped away.

The final round lacked dramatic fireworks, resembling an intense sparring session between familiar rivals. Romero simply couldn't find the late knockout he needed, allowing Lopez to coast through the final bell and seal his third division world title.

With the victory, Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) joins an elite fraternity of three-division champion division kings, while Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) leaves his home town empty-handed after a valiant single-title reign.
