Singapore---Filipino Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. opened his bid for another crown with huge wins against Nov Chanty of Cambodia in the second round of the 24th ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships 2026 -Standard Challengers section at the Our Tampines Hub in Singapore Sunday, August 9.
Bernardino prevailed after 61 moves of Catalan Opening using the white pieces.
" I'll hope I can sustain the momentum," said the 49-years old Bernardino, a standout from Quezon City/Mandaluyong City.
Bernardino, a certified Filipino and United States chess master defeated compatriot Kyla Jane Langue after 31 moves of Birds Opening in the first round on Saturday.
Bernardino is fresh from winning the 100th Saturday Evening Casual Blitz Chess Tournament at the Red Knight Chess Cafe in Bambini Villa, Sukhumvit, Bangkok, Thailand last August 1.
Also with perfect 2.0 points that includes WNM Loreshyl Cuizon of the Philippines, WFM Tran Le Dan Thuy, Luu Huong Cuong Thinh, Bui Duc Huy and AIM Huynh Nguyen Anh Quan of Vietnam and WIM Tejaswini Sagar of India.
Meanwhile, Another Filipino entry NM Edmundo Gatus upset IM Enrique Paciencia of Singapore to raise his total 2.0 points in the combined Senior 50 & Senior 65, the same output of GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., and IM Rico Mascarinas and FM Arlan Cabe of the Philippines, GM Tu Hoang Thong and GM Cao Sang of Vietnam,GM Petr Kiriakov of Russia, and FM Altan-Och Genden of Mongolia.
In the Premier division, GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and GM Le Tuan Minh of Vietnam shared the top spot with 2.0 points apiece, half point ahead with GM Darwin Laylo, IM Michael Concio Jr. and WFM Shania Mae Mendoza of the Philippines with 1.5 markers together with nine others chess player.
The Filipinos campaign is being supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Cong. Prospero Pichay Jr. and Mr. Ignatius Leong.
