Bangkok, Thailand----Filipino Grandmaster Daniel Quizon won the Open division title in the 2nd Bangkok Summer International Chess Open and earned his 4.7 FIDE Standard Rating held at the Royal Benja Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The 21-year-old Quizon scored 7.5 points on account of six wins and three draws in nine outings to clinch the title.
Grandmaster Timur Gareyev of the USA, International Master Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines, International Master Ilijya Grigorjev of Russia and FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri of the Philippines finished the 9 round tournament with 7.0 points.
After the tie break points were applied, Gareyeb wound up second, Concio settled for third , Grigorjev end up fourth while Nouri dropped at fifth place.
Quizon scored victories over Edward Tunguia of the Philippines (1st round), Rathasart Jiroajvanichakorn of Thailand (3rd round,) Arsens Batashevs of Latvia (4th round), Bandyopadhyay Neelabhro of India (6th round), Jerish John Velarde of the Philippines (7th round),and Grandmaster Timur Garayev of the USA (8th round).
He split the points with
Tupfah Khumnorkaew of Thailand (second round), FM Thanadon Kulpruethanon of Thailand (5th round), and IM Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines (9th round).
"First place feels wonderful," said Quizon, the pride of Dasmarinas City, Cavite who is set to compete in the 24th ASEAN+Age-Group Chess Championships to be held on August 7 to 17, 2026 at Tampines Hub in Singapore. (Marlon Bernardino)
