Pinoy chesser bags gold in China tilt

Giovanni "Jojo" Dy, a Filipino based in Beijing, China and certified an online Arena Grandmaster (AGM), has once again made his mark by clinching the gold medal at the prestigious Beijing Blitz Grand Prix 6th leg held last Sunday, April 26, 2026 in Beijing, China.

The former chess coach of the multi-titled De La Salle University Taft Manila, delivered another outstanding performance on the international stage.

Dy finished with an impressive undefeated score of 6.5 points on account of six wins, and one draw in the seven-round tournament.

This achievement not only boosts his standing in the rankings but also sets the stage for further success in upcoming China tournaments.

His crucial wins against Edmon Khachatryan of Armenia in the seventh and final round to secure the title.

"Fortunately, I was able to defend against his queen side attack and I found the correct defense," said Coach Dy, who hails from Malabon.

He is the only Filipino among 22 players from China, US, France, Armenia and Russia competing in the 1-day blitz, 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment time control format.

It shall be recalled that Coach Dy finished in third place in the Beijing Blitz Grand Prix in Beijing, China held last April 12, 2026. (Marlon Bernardino)
