David Ray Sarmiento finishes second place in Cologne January Blitz 2026.

A promising Filipino chess talent from Nueva Ecija, a Nursing Student based in Germany, finished 2nd in Cologne, Germany Blitz chess tournament.

Sarmiento had 12 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses at the end of the tournament that ended last Sunday in Cologne, Germany.

"Cologne January Blitz 2026 2nd place in a very strong tournament field. Consistently performing 2100-2200+ tournament performance rating since April 2025," Sarmiento posted on his Facebook account.

It shall be recalled that the 21-year-old, a promising Filipino chess talent from Nueva Ecija, won the 50th Anniversary Emden Chess Club Rapid Chess Championship in Germany last September 14, 2025. He finished with 6.0 points, achieving 5 wins and 2 draws.

Previously, in April 2025, Sarmiento finished second place in the B division out of 1,195 players in the Open B division of the Grenke Chess Open, where he secured 8.0 points.

He is a nursing student based in Germany.

Sarmiento also placed second in Müngersdorfer Bürgerturnier 2026, a Standard competition with a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment and added 15 minutes from move 40 also held in Cologne,Germany last January 11, 2026.-Marlon Bernardino-
