Suelo rules Thailand chess tourney

FIDE Master Robert Suelo emerged as champion of the 67th Saturday Blitz Chess Tournament at Red Knight Chess Cafe in Bangkok, Thailand recently.

Suelo, the 1996 Philippine Junior Champion and currently the head chess coach of Laos Chess Team, finished the 7-round Swiss system competition with an unbeaten record of 6.0 points on account of five wins and two draws to clinch the title.

FM Han Thiha Sai of Myanmar, Anda Leksukhum of Thailand and WCM Jia-Tien Chua of Malaysia occupied the second to fourth spots with identical 5.0 points.

Completing the top 10 were WNM Loreshyl Cuizon of the Philippines, Bounthanh of Laos, Proud Suthiponpaisam of Thailand, Ilia Bourgin of Israel, Pete Phanthajarunithi of Thailand and Ivan Yarkin of Russia.

"Grateful to God—skipped the seafood buffet, served checkmates instead, and became Champion of the 67th Saturday Evening Blitz at Knight Chess Cafe, together with Lao SEA Games delegates Bounled, Bounthan, and Selena," said Suelo, an active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC).

It shall be recalled that Suelo helped the Barangay Malamig, Rizal Technological Colleges Chess Team in numerous Championship trophies during his College days in the mid 90's dominating the National Capital Region-State Colleges Universities Athletic Association (NCR-SCUAA) chess meet. -Marlon Bernardino-
