The blockbuster battle between ?Pretty Boy? Floyd Mayweather Jr and Ricky ?The Hitman? Hatton which was telecast over the giant Philippine broadcast network ABS-CBN last Sunday turned in exceptional television ratings.
According to AGB Nielsen Media TV Meter ratings which is the broadcast industry?s official ratings arm, the Mayweather-Hatton fight rated 34.5 percent nationwide over the pre-eminent Channel 2 while it registered a lower rating of 26.3 percent in Mega Manila.
According to ABS-CBN vice president for Sports Peter Musngi this may be attributed to the fact that the fight was also shown ?live? on the ?Balls? Sports channel of ABS-CBN as well as in three theaters in Metro Manila.
The ratings in the Visayas region shot up to 45.2 percent while it was even much higher in Mindanao with a 53.6 percent rating.
Big boxing events in recent weeks rated poorly in comparison, with the IBF/IBO flyweight title fight of Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire against Luis Maldonado telecast over GMA 7 rating 17 percent while the ?Payback? card headlined by Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista vs Antonio Meza over ABC 5 rated an average of 8.2 percent.
