SAULONG FAILS IN WORLD TITLE BID AGAINST IWASA; NERY STOPS YAMANAKA IN 2

Longshot Ernesto Saulong of the Philippines failed in his world title bid when he was defeated by defending IBF super bantamweight champion Ryosuke Iwasa of Japan by wide unanimous decision Thursday night, Mar. 1, at Kokugikan Sumo Stadium in Tokyo, Japan.

Judges Ian Scott of New Zealand had it 109-119; Katsuhiko Nakamura of Japan, 108-120 and Greg Ortega of the Philippines, 110-118 all in favor for the Japanese.

Iwasa has now upped his win-loss-draw record to 25-2-0 with 16 knockouts while Saulong dropped to 21-3-1, 8KOs.

In the main event Luis Nery of Mexico again stopped Shinsuke Yamanaka of Japan in the 2nd round of their rematch for the WBC world bantamweight title. The title however remained vacant as Nery failed to make the required 118 lbs weight during Wednesday's weighin where he was stripped of the title. During their first fight last August, Nery stopped Yamanaka in the 4th round to wrest the title from the Japanese long time belt-holder. Later however Nery failed the drug test which moved the WBC to order an immediate rematch.
