IBF and IBO flyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr is set to arrive in Cebu on Monday to continue the better part of his training at the famed ALA Gym in preparation for his December 1 title defense against Mexican Luis "Titi" Maldonado in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.
Donaire will be making the first defense of his dual titles which he won with an easy fifth-round technical knockout victory over Vic Darchinyan last July 7.
Donaire, who will be accompanied by his trainer/father Nonito Sr in the trip, is set to touch down on a PAL flight around 9AM at the Cebu-Mactan International Airport.
"We are very honored to be given the opportunity to train at the ALA Gym in Cebu, which is a highly-respected boxing facility in the country. We will be forever indebted to Mr. Aldeguer," said Donaire Sr in an e-mail.
Cebuano sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, who owns the world-renowned ALA Gym, is expected to meet the father-and-son team at the airport.
Donaire has started initial training at his base in San Leandro, California, but has decided to train in Cebu owing to the facilities available at the ALA Gym, as well as the abundance of possible sparring partners who can help the young champion in his war preparation.
"It is our honor to welcome a world champ in our gym. We will do whatever it takes to give him the support he needs," said Aldeguer, who also manages WBO world champion Donnie Nietes, in an interview yesterday.
