Jonas Sultan of the famed ALA Gym has won the Philippine super flyweight title beating defending champion Rene Dacquel by a unanimous twelve round decision at the Mandaluyong City Gymnasium last Saturday.
With the win the 23 year old Sultan who was ranked No. 9 in the last ratings of the Games and Amusements Board improved his record to 9-2 with 5 knockouts while the 24 year old Dacquel who was ranked No. 4 dropped to 14-5-1 with 5 knockouts.
All three judges scored the fight for Sultan. British judge Robert Bridges had Sultan the winner by a lopsided 117-109 score while Carlo Baluyut 115-111 and Fernando Batistil 114-112 turned in much closer scorecards.
Dacquel was given a standing eight count by referee Virgilio Garcia when he held on to the ropes to prevent himself from going down after being caught by a solid left jab when off-balance with 46 seconds remaining in round No. 3 from Sultan, the younger brother of veteran Dondon Sultan.
Earlier in the round Sultan hurt Dacquel with a big overhand right although the youngster fought back gamely and tried to turn things around .tan suffered a small cut after a clash of heads towards the end of round seven which referee Garcia didn?t see but when there was a second accidental clash of heads in the ninth round referee Garcia caught it as blood was flowing from near the left eye at 1:42 of the 9th round.
Viva Sports commentator Mike Ochosa said Sultan ?outworked, out-boxed and out-punched Dacquel and deserved the victory.
Veteran slugger Danilo ?Pit Bull? Pena won the Luzon Pro Boxing Association featherweight title with a unanimous 7th round technical decision over tough Rey Juntilla after a cut suffered by Pena due to a accidental clash of heads in the 2nd round was aggravated and they were forced to go to the scorecards of the judges.
Ferdinand EStrella had Pena ahead 68-64 at the time of the stoppage while Danilo Lopez and Benz Penafiel also had Pena in front 67-64.
Pena who was two pounds over the limit at the official weigh-in on Friday was able to make the 126 pound limit after several minutes of running.
