Macau - In the first fight of the HBO Pay Per View card, Jessie Vargas of Las Vegas successfully defended his World Boxing Association Junior Welterweight belt with a bruising Unanimous Decision nod over former world champion, Antonio De Marco of Tijuana, Mexico.
Vargas and De Marco engaged in a bloody and rough fight that produced facial slits, cuts and welts between the two fighters.
Vargas dominated the first half of their championship bout, slashing his opponent with hard punches in the face which reddened De Marco's face early.
But the former Mexican champion, who is trained and egged by Freddie Roach, picked up the pieces in the 7th and unleashed heavy blows on his opponent which produced a cut below the left eye of Vargas. He stunned Vargas in the 10th with an uppercut but his opponent never went down.
With his left eye closing, Vargas mustered enough strength to salvage Rounds 11 and 12 to pad his lead in the judges' cards.
The scores were 116-112 across the board on all three score sheets.
Vargas, who is now being trained by Roy Jones Jr., also remained unbeaten (26-0) with the win and positioned himself for bigger and more profitable fights in the future.
