ARUM SAYS PACQUIAO-ALGIERI FIGHT IS POSSIBLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Jun 2014 Algieri. Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who will undergo surgery to replace his painful right knee tomorrow (Wednesday, Manila Time) says a title clash between ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao and newly crowned WBO Junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri is possible. Arum told the Manila Standard that Algieri, who won a somewhat controversial decision over Ruslan Provodnikov at the Barclays Center who despite dropping Algieri twice in the opening round lost a disputed split decision, ?is a possibility.? However, the Top Rank promoter said he is ?not making any moves ?regarding Pacquiao?s scheduled November 22 fight in Macau but is waiting for Pacquiao who is on vacation with his family in Israel and is reportedly going to California from Israel.? Arum told the Standard ?I hope to meet with him when he comes over.? At the same time Arum squashed reports from multiple sources that Pacquiao was looking at a possible fight with junior welterweight champion Danny ?Swift? Garcia. He said ?that?s not possible.? The much-traveled promoter who is in his eighties told us he will be in hospital ?for three days, then proceed to Phoenix for another three days and on will be in Los Angeles on Monday.? He said he would have to undergo ?three to four weeks of rehab to be fully functional and hopes to be in Macau for WBO/WBA super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux?s title defense against Thailand?s Sod Looknongyangtoy (Kokietgym) on July 19 in a card that will also feature former WBO/WBA flyweight champion Brian Viloria and undefeated former Olympic gold medalist Zou Shiming of China. In the meantime Lem Satterfield has quoted Algieri who said ?I already fought the most dangerous guy around for very cheap, so now, let's go for the big guys and maybe that's Manny Pacquiao. I think that we have a lot of momentum right now and that the boxing world would like to see that. I think that they're probably going to be saying the same thing about that fight as they did about Provodnikov.? Algieri went on ?I think that they maybe won't think that I stand a chance so much but apparently, I'm good in those fights. I would like that fight. That's the top of the sport, the top of the heap and I would think that anyone who had that opportunity would say that they want that fight too. I wouldn't fight anybody I don't think that I could beat.? He said ?stylistically, it's a good fight for me. I think that if we were to make that fight happen and if I were to prepare the right way and have everything go similar to how this preparation went for Provodnikov, that I would be ready for a Manny Pacquiao fight this year" even as he indicated readiness to move up to 147 to make the fight happen, adding ?I think that I have the height and reach at 147 and I've got a significant height and reach advantage on Manny anyway. So, at 147 or at 140, catchweight, it doesn't make a difference." Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
