SONSONA WINS OVER VAZQUEZ JR BY SPLIT DECISION

New York -- Marvin Sonsona eager to prove his worth in the big stage, scored a Split Decision victory over former tormentor Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in 10 rounds of rugged action at Madison Square Garden in New York City Saturday night.

Sonsona dropped Vazquez in the opening round and grabbed the win with scores of 96-92, 96-92 and 92-96 from the three judges at ringside.

The 23 year old fighter from General Santos City showed his power early with that knockdown and was aggressive in the first three rounds of the bout where he forced Vazquez to the ropes and corner plenty of times.

Vazquez answered in the 4th and 5th, starting with jabs, followed by straight rights that hit his foe. Sonsona also showed signs of fatigue at this point, which lessened his punch output compared to the first three.

Sonsona was deducted a point in the 6th after he struck Vazquez in the back of the head which the Filipino contested to no avail.

A series of falls, slips and accidental head clashes occurred which Referee Steve Willis was quick to react too.

Sonsona avenged his prior loss to Vazquez, his only defeat, with the victory that earned him the NABF Featherweight belt and positioned himself for a crack at the champions of the 126 pound class in the future.
