Results from New York: Lee KOs Jackson; Maciel decisions Melendez By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 08 Jun 2014 New York - The HBO Pay-Per- View portion of tonight's fights from New York started right after the first five undercard bouts at around 9 pm EST. Fans slowly poured in and the Madison Square Garden is already halfway filled by this time, with a good two hours before the main event that is the Cotto - Martinez war. The HBO telecast kicked off with a bruising Super Welterweight battle between Andy Lee (32-2, 22 KOs) of Limerick, Ireland and John Jackson (18-1, 15 KOs) of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. Jackson dropped Lee with a hard right hook with one minute left in the first that almost ended the night for the Irish fighter. Jackson would dominate Lee in the following rounds, even hurting him in the 2nd and the 4th rounds. He almost sent Lee to the canvas in the 5th with punishing combinations but the ropes held up Lee enabling him to escape the knockdown. Jackson who was looking to finish Lee pursued the Irishman to one corner but Lee unleashed a short right counter that flattened Jackson immediately. Referee Benjy Estevez waived off the fight immediately and summoned for medical assistance as Jackson laid motionless in the canvas. Jackson recovered after that scary knockout and congratulated Lee on the superb knockout after their fight. Lee won the vacant NABF Super Middleweight title with the knockout. Time of the knockout was 1:07 of the 5th. *** Another bruising battle, this time in the Featherweight division followed HBO's initial televised fight between Jorge Melendez (28-3-1, 26 KOs) of Manati, Puerto Rico and Javier Maciel (28-3, 20 KOs) of Malvinas, Argentina. Puerto Rico suffered its first defeat of the evening when Maciel scored a Majority Decision victory with scores of 96-92, 97-91 against an even 94-94 on all three judges at ringside. Maciel started hitting Melendez early and then he dropped Melendez in the 4th with a right which put him ahead in the score cards early. Melendez recovered after the knockdown and tried to make up for lost rounds but the game and active Argentinean would not let up on his attacks on the Puerto Rican. Maciel strongly finished the last two rounds despite Melendez's last ditch aggressiveness. He countered Melendez with hooks upstairs when, in a rugged exchange of punches in the 12th.
