CUELLO BACK IN THE GYM, TARGETS COMEBACK BY MID-YEAR By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 02 Apr 2014 Denver Cuello. Denver "The Excitement" Cuello has been given the green light to resume training. Promoter Aljoe Jaro informed philboxing that the former world title challenger has been hitting the heavy bag, lifting weights and doing all the routine gym work except for sparring. Jaro said that Cuello has been cleared by his doctor after undergoing surgery on his injured shoulder almost ten months ago. Cuello challenged then reigning WBC strawweight champion Xiong Zhao Zhong of China but lost by majority decision. The southpaw Cuello knocked down Zhong in round one but had to endure fighting with an injured right shoulder for the rest of the bout. Jaro stated that he plans to have Cuello resume sparring next month and is eyeing a comeback for his prized fighter sometime at the end of June or the second week of July. "He can punch at full strength with his right but we are still gradually bringing him back so he can be comfortable punching at full strength," said Jaro, "I'm thinking of having his comeback fight at the Resorts World. I am starting to look for an opponent. But my real target is a rematch with Zhong, who is now an ex-champion." "I'm also thinking about WBA miniflyweight champion Pornsawan Porpramok of Thailand or former WBA interim miniflyweight champion Jesus Silvestre of Mexico," Jaro added, " My aim is for Denver to be the mandatory challenger of the new WBC champion Oswaldo Novoa. The late WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman promised us another title shot when he was alive, the WBC board of governors were informed by Don Jose when I wrote a letter of complaint, the new president Mauricio Sulaiman also knows." Denver is also starting his morning road work. Jaro said that Cuello is now at 120lbs. 15lbs over the strawweight or miniflywieght limit. He feels that Cuello's shoulder will be stronger and better than before. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rene Bonsubre, Jr.. |
