By Carlos Costa PhilBoxing.com Thu, 06 Feb 2014

Fighting for the first time outside of his native Mexico, Oswaldo "Gallito" Novoa (R) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, overpowered Chinese Xiong Zhao Zhong in five torrid rounds to claim the World Boxing Council (WBC) Minimumweight World Championship Wednesday night (Feb 5) in Haikou City, Southern China.
The 32-year-old "Gallito" Novoa, who was ranked as world's #2 by the WBC, improves his fighting record to 13 wins, 4 loses, 1 draw, with 8 wins by way of KO, while the Xiong - the first ever boxing world champion born in China - comes down to 22 victories, 5 defeats, 1 fight even and 12 wins by knockout.
In the main supporting fight, 36 year-old former WBC world champion Sirimongkol Singwancha (76-2, 48 KO's) of Thailand, retained for the fourth time his WBC Asia Council Continental welterweight (147 lbs) title by stopping Chinese rookie Yang Xing Xin, 21, in six rounds. The referee was Malcolm Bulner of Melbourne, Australia.
In another international clash, 23 year-old 122-pounder Qiu Xiao Jun (11-2, 4 KO's) of Suzhou, China, retained his WBC Asia Council Continental super bantamweight belt and WBC Youth World super bantamweight title by scoring a 10-round unanimous decision win over Jason "Nugget" Cooper (8-2-1 4 KO's) of Queensland, Australia. The third man was Thailand's Thawuth Pluemsamran.
The exciting card was a production of Chinese promoter Liu Gang of Zovi Boxing Promotions aired LIVE on China's sport channel CCTV 5.
