RYAN REY PONTERAS STOPS JAPANESE FOE BUT LOSES BY "DEFEAT BY FOUL" JBC RULE PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Jun 2013 Gigowan, Okinawa, Japan - The Philippines' Ryan Rey Ponteras lost a fight he should have won by technical knockout when officials of the Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) Southwest District declared that Okinawan Go Onaga was the winner through a strange ruling they called "defeat by foul" in the 4th of a scheduled 8-round fight here. Ponteras, fighting like a hungry lion to the point of being reckless, caught Onaga with a cracking right to the jaw in the 4th of their scheduled 8-round non-title fight sending the Okinawan fighter reeling towards the ropes, his back against Ponteras. Following the instructions of his corner, Ponteras pursued Onaga and rained him with punches some of which hit him in the back and the head. Seeing Onaga helpless and flailing on the ropes, the Japanese referee stepped in and stopped the fight and allowed him to sit on a chair for five minutes in a bizarre scene where the JBC officials were asking the Okinawan fighter whether he still wanted to continue the fight. Onaga later told the JBC officials he did not want to continue and the boxing commission ruled that Ponteras lost the fight under a "Defeat by Foul" rule. Confronted by Ponteras' camp after the fight, the JBC officials could not give an explanation on whether the fight was declared "Disqualification," "Technical Decision," or "TKO." Under the widely accepted boxing rules, the universal ruling is "a boxer who could not continue the fight, loses the fight." Before the bizarre ruling in the 4th round of the fight, the Ponteras-Onaga fight was a slambang of a contest. The Filipino fighter started like a house on fire, pursuing the Okinawan and sending him to the canvas in the second round, a knockdown which was ruled by the Japanese referee as a slip. Towards the end of the third round, Onaga caught Ponteras with crisp combinations to the head and the Filipino went down for a count of eight. Ponteras stood up immediately and when the fight resumed for Round 4, he caught Onaga with a crack right to the jaw which obviously hurt the Japanese fighter who turned his back on Ponteras as he reeled towards the ropes. Instead of declaring Ponteras winner by TKO as the helpless Onaga turned his back on the Filipino who continued to rain him with punches, the Japanese referee asked for a chair and allowed the Okinawan boxer to rest for five minutes, allegedly because Ponteras delivered illegal blows to the back of the head of his opponent. After the 5-minute rest, Onaga signaled he did not want to continue and the referee waved off the fight. The JBC officials later announced that Ponteras lost the fight through a "Defeat by Foul" ruling. "I have grown old in boxing but this is the first time I have seen a boxer who could not continue the fight being declared winner," said boxing trainer Aljo Jaro who was in Ponteras' corner. Jaro said he will take up the strange ruling with the main office of the Japan Boxing Commission. "Ponteras should have won by TKO, instead he lost by "Defeat by Foul" ruling. This is unbelievable," Jaro complained. The JBC Southwest District officials who made the ruling were at a loss on what to indicate in their official decision of the Ponteras-Onaga fight as there is no such rule as "Defeat By Foul." If it was a disqualification, the referee should have declared it as such after Ponteras delivered the blows which he considered as "illegal blows." Photo: Ponteras (R) with trainer Aljoe Jaro. |
