ARUM TO MAKE FORMAL OFFER TO GOLDEN BOY ON TUESDAY

PhilBoxing.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he will make a formal offer to Golden Boy Promotions on Tuesday to co-promote the fight every fight fan wants to see – a rematch between Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao and WBC super featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera.

Prior to our overseas telephone conversation with Arum at noon yesterday, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that he would be “willing to guarantee (Pacquiao) $3.5 million vs the fifty-fifty” offer he had made earlier for Golden Boy to promote the Pacquiao-Barrera rematch.

Arum responded to the latest offer of a guarantee by Schaefer saying “I wouldn’t think that’s enough and 50-50 is something that’s not going to fly.”

At the same time the Top Rank promoter said he was not concerned about Schaefer’s statement that Golden Boy didn’t need to negotiate with him. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve talked to people at HBO and their advice to me is to proceed with the letter on Tuesday” detailing a formal offer to the Barrera camp. Arum said he will then make it public.

Arum said “let them take the next step” adding that “whatever they do, I cant force them (Golden Boy). He conceded it was “all posture.”

In making their original 50-50 offer Schaefer contended it was not up to Bob Arum to respond insisting that he had no promotional rights to Pacquiao after Pacquiao signed a seven fight deal with Golden Boy in mid-September. Schaefer said “we do not intend to negotiate with him (Arum). However, we do not want to stand in the fighters way to make this fight nor do we want to deprive the public from seeing this epic battle.”

Schaefer said Barrera’s willingness to agree to a 50-50 deal was “certainly a generous offer.” Schaefer earlier gave Pacquiao a January 1 deadline to accept the offer emphasizing that they are “not willing to sit around and wait.”

Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today was made to understand that should the Pacquiao-Barrera rematch not happen, Barrera would defend his title against Juan Manuel Marquez on March 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
