DOMINGO DEFENDS BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 07 Dec 2006
Michael Domingo who put up a game challenge against tough Frenchman Frederic Patrac before losing by a 9th round KO in a WBF title fight in France last October 3 hopes to get back to his winning ways when he defends his Philippine bantamweight crown against upset-conscious Edgar Gabejan in Talisay, Cebu on Friday.
The title fight which will be telecast on the top-rated weekly boxing show “The Main Event” on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. over RPN 9 and replayed over the cable network Viva Prime, is sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum.
In his last title defense Domingo eked out a split decision over former champion Johnny Lear giving Gabehan hope that he could pull off an upset against the 27 year old champion who fights out of the famed ALA Gym in Cebu. Domingo is also highly rated by the OPBF, the Pan Asia Boxing Association and the WBO Asia Pacific. He has a record of 29-15-3 with 14 knockouts while Gabejan who is from the Bert Obidos stable in Baguio City has a record of 13-11 with 4 KO's and is currently rated No. 1 by the Games and Amusements Board.
In the main supporting bout on a fight card dubbed “Pound For Pound” WBA Pan African light flyweight champion Bert Batawang clashes with tough Rey Orais in a ten round bout. The southpaw Batawang who has 30 knockouts in 36 wins with 12 losses and 3 draws is coming off back-to-back TKO victories over Noel Veronque on April 22 and Robert Rubillar last September 9.
Not to be outdone Orais scored a third round knockout over veteran world title challenger Noel Tunacao last October 3. In another eagerly awaited fight undefeated KO specialist Mark Jason Melligen who has a record of 4 knockouts in 5 wins battles veteran Rex Marzan in a fight card that promises to provide exciting action.
In another battle of heavy punchers Rocky Fuentes who boasts of a 16-5-2 record with 10 KO's takes on Rolly Mandahinog who has 6 KO's in 14 wins although he also has 14 losses and 2 draws.
