The 19-year-old So, the country?s highest-ranked player and the tournament?s top seed with an Elo rating of 2682, took a break from his studies at Webster University in the United States to compete in the event hosted by Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham ?Bambol? Tolentino Jr. and the city council, settled for a draw with Vietnamese GM Cao Sang after 30 moves of Four Knights Game to finish second of the World Chess Olympiad qualifying tournament yesterday (Tuesday) at the Tagaytay International Convention Center here. So, finished with 5 wins, 4 draws with a total output of 7 points in the Nine Round Swiss-System Tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's chairman/president Prospero 'Butch' Pichay Jr. which attracted 42 woodpushers. Fide Master Mari Joseph Turqueza, stalwart of San Sebastian College halved the point with IM Farid Firman Syah of Indonesia after 32 moves of Queens Pawn game to scored 5.0 points and obtained his first International Master result. Michael Gotel, Ateneo chess coach and Nelson 'Elo' Mariano III, UE chess trainer and playing under the banner of Chesskidzllp, agreed their game into a 31 moves draw of King's Indian skirmish to enroute their outright Fide Master Title after tallying 4.5 points apiece. Joining Villanueva, Gotel and Mariano III for the outright FM Title is Manny Yu of GMA-Cavite, who held IM Oliver Dimakiling into a draw after 42 pushes of French defense to finished 4.5 points. Meanwhile, WGM Nguyen Thi Thanh An of Vietnam bowed to WIM Catherine Perena of the Philippines but still this year's women's division champion and advanced to the Women's World Chess Championships with 6.5 points. Bernadette Galas of the Philippines, meanwhile defeated WGM Hoang Thi Bao Tram of Vietnam to gain her outright Woman International Master title. Galas finished 6.0 points, the same output of WGM Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam and WIM Medina Warda Aulia of Indonesia. Galas, a graduating high school student from Gen. Pio del Pilar in Makati City is the youngest Woman International Master at the age of 16.
